Ziel des Instituts war, die kulturellen und gesellschaftspolitischen Institutionen der Industrienationen auf ihre Werte hin zu untersuchen. Dabei stand die Frage im Vordergrund, was der sogenannte Fortschritt und die industrielle Produktionsweise der Menschheit wirklich gebracht haben.<br>Untersucht wurden unter anderem die Auswirkungen von Schule, Verkehr, Technik und Medizin auf den Menschen. Haupts\u00e4chlich prangert Illich die Anma\u00dfung an, mit der die Industrienationen die sogenannte Dritte Welt zwingen, den gleichen Weg von Entwicklung einzuschlagen, wie sie selbst. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So sieht er auch in der Entwicklungshilfe eine neue Form des Kolonialismus. Die Menschen der Dritten Welt werden nicht mehr mit Waffengewalt gezwungen, sich in den Dienst der Industrienationen zu stellen, sondern s\u00fcchtig gemacht nach deren Erzeugnissen und Institutionen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Im Lauf der Jahre hat sich das Institut zu einer Art Volksuniversit\u00e4t entwickelt, und mehr als 20.000 Menschen aus verschiedenen L\u00e4ndern und Zusammenh\u00e4ngen haben an Seminaren und Veranstaltungen teilgenommen.
