The Age of Mercenaries* (Emirates)

Persian Gulf, 1971

PERSIAN-ARABIAN GOLF 1971

„"Although England withdrew its troops from the Persian Gulf, English, Canadians, and Australians remained to build up local armies that were no longer under the British Crown but under the command of the new rulers. They became mercenaries in foreign service. They were followed by technicians, development experts, and other specialists who also placed themselves at the service of the new rulers to protect British and other Western interests. Bearers of foreign values, representatives of Western development models, gravediggers of local cultures—they, too, were mercenaries in the broadest sense of the word. Through examples from and interviews with mercenaries, the film shows how so-called decolonization only strengthens the influence of the former colonial powers—through a steadily growing army of 'mercenaries' of every kind."‚
