Trotz des offiziellen Verbots von Kinderarbeit müssen in vielen Ländern der Dritten Welt die Kinder mitarbeiten, um das Überleben ihrer Familien zu sichern.
Wie am Beispiel der bolivianischen Stadt Santa Cruz gezeigt wird, sind dort die meisten Kinder Kleinhändler. Da die Verantwortung für die Familie auf alle ihre Mitglieder verteilt ist, kann es eine Erziehung in unserem Sinne, in der die Eltern das Sagen haben, ebenso wenig geben, wie eine behütete Kindheit, in der die Kinder von den Problemen des Alltags ferngehalten werden. Von ihnen wird ein hohes Maß an Selbständigkeit erwartet, entweder indem sie selbst arbeiten, im Haus helfen oder für die kleineren Geschwister sorgen. Da den Eltern die Zeit fehlt, sich um die Kinder zu kümmern, müssen sie darauf vertrauen, daß sie verantwortlich handeln. Die Kinder wiederum sind sich der Bedeutung, die sie für den Erhalt der Familie haben, bewußt und werden demgemäß respektiert.

Despite the official ban on child-labour, in most countries of the Third World children have to work to ensure the survival of their families.
For instance, in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, children are mainly occupied in small trade. Since responsibility is placed equally on all family members, education in the Western sense of the term does not apply here. The parent’s word is as irrelevant in this context, as a protected, cocooned, childhood is. A high degree of responsibility is expected of the children, whether they go out to work on their own, or help in the household, or take care of younger siblings. Since the parents have little time to devote to their children, they have to rely on the child’s sense of responsibility and have, accordingly, to respect it. The children, in turn, know how important they are for their family’s livelihood.

Dans de nombreux pays du Tiers Monde, il y a interdiction officielle de faire travailler les enfants mais bien des familles ne pourraient pas survivre sans le travail des enfants.
La ville bolivienne de Santa Cruz en est un bon exemple. On peut y constater que la plupart des enfants y font du petit commerce de rue. Comme tous les membres d’une famille ont leur responsabilité dans son maintien, il n’y est pas question d’une éducation comme nous la comprenons dans nos pays et telle que les parents y ont le dernier mot. Il ne saurait pas davantage être question d’une enfance protégée et de tenir les enfants à l’écart des problèmes du quotidien. Au contraire, il leur faut faire preuve d’une grande autonomie en travaillant eux-mêmes au dehors ou à la maison. Il ont aussi souvent la charge de leurs plus jeunes frères et sœurs. Comme les parents n’ont pas le temps de s’occuper de leurs enfants, ils attendent d’eux qu’ils se conduisent de façon responsable. En revanche, les enfants sont conscients du rôle qui leur revient dans la survie de la famille et jouissent du respect qu’on leur porte.
